Current Cell-Phone Radiation Rates Underestimate Exposure

According to recent studies, the limits considered safe for low-level radiation absorbed from cell-phones operating at their highest power output levels, known as Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), set by the Federal Communications Commission do not adequately protect the majority of individuals that use cell-phones, especially children who absorb more radiation than adults.

The reason behind this inconsistency in safety standards has been traced back to the testing procedure used in certifying cell-phone compliance with SAR limits. The procedure underestimates the radiation exposure levels for many cell-phone users, according to the researchers from the Environmental Health Trust. Researchers say that the testing used liquid filled mannequin heads based on upper end US military recruits to simulate the average electrical conductivity in the brain. The test heads, known as Specific Anthropomorphic Mannequins (SAM), are large than that of 97 percent of the US population. Average cell-phone users are smaller adults and children’s, who absorb much more radiation that SAM estimates.

The researchers noted that SAM’s uniformly consistent liquid filled head is unable to accurately simulate the varied capacity of the 40 different types of brain tissue that absorb cell-phone radiation. SAMs are also incapable of providing accurate data on how a child’s head, which is significantly smaller and has a thinner skull, absorbs radiation. The test itself is also flawed in the way that it underestimates exposure levels, keeping phones roughly 1-inch from the head during calls, rather than the way most people use them like in the pocket or held directly against the head. Researchers say that MRI and CT scans would allow for far more accurate data.

As a Vancouver personal injury lawyer, I hope that providing this information will shed some light on this issue. Though not a prevalent problem, cell-phones, and the amount in which they are current used today, are relatively new to our society and need to be further tested. If you’ve been injured through the use of an unsafe product, it may be in your best interests to call a personal injury lawyer.

FDA Upgrades CareFusion Ventilators Recall to Class 1

In a press release, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the upgrade in classification of the recall for CareFusion Corp’s EnVe ventilator units to Class-1, the most severe designation given by the agency.

CareFusion, a drug-delivery systems and respiratory equipment manufacturer, initiated a voluntary recall of the ventilator units last months due to an issue with potential disconnection during transport. A notice was sent to 29 customers in pediatric and adult critical care. The failure to adequately ventilate patients with severe respiratory problems could potentially result in serious neurological injury or even death. The recall affects only the EnVe ventilator units manufactured in the period between December 2010 and May 2011. CareFusion is currently working to correct and update the hardware and software on the affects units.

Class-1 recall designations are issued in situations where the agency finds there is reasonable probability that use of or exposure to the recalled product could cause severely adverse health consequences or death.

As a Vancouver personal injury lawyer, I’ve seen recalls similar to this in the past and know the dangers these defective products pose to consumers. I hope that by making this information more readily available, potential injury can be avoided in the future. If you’ve been injured through the use of a defective medical device, it may be in your best interests to speak with an experienced personal injury lawyer in your area.

One Man Hospitalized After SR-500 Multiple Car Pileup

News sources reported that a 40-year-old Portland man sustained moderate injuries in a four-vehicle pileup accident near Vancouver Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the accident occurred just before 4:45pm on State Road 500 as the vehicles approached Northeast Stapleton Road. Slow traffic caused three vehicles to slow to a stop. However, the fourth vehicle, driven by the 40-year-old Portland man, was unable to stop in time to avoid an accident, causing a chain reaction that affected the three vehicles in front of him.

The 40-year-old man was taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver for the treatment of injuries to his neck and back that he sustained during the crash. He was listed in satisfactory condition by hospital staff as of Wednesday night. Two of the other drivers, operating the two vehicles sandwiched in the middle, a 58-year-old Battleground woman and a 33-year-old Vancouver woman, sustained injury during the crash, but were not taken to the hospital for treatment. The driver of the front vehicle, an 18-year-old Vancouver woman, escaped the accident unscathed. The Washington State Patrol stated that all drivers were wearing their seatbelts during the accident, and has since cited the 40-year-old Portland man for following another vehicle too closely.

As a Vancouver car accident lawyer, I’ve seen similar accidents in the past and am relieved to learn that no one was more seriously injured. I wish all the occupants involved a quick recovery from their injuries so that they may put this event behind them. If you’ve been injured in an accident that you believe was the direct result of another driver’s negligent actions, it may be in your best interests to speak with a car accident lawyer in your area.

Distracted Driving on the Rise

According to recent studies, there was a significant increase in auto accidents as soon as mobile gadgetry became prominent in vehicles. People preferred taking calls while they are driving, and the date gets worse when people attempt sending text messages while behind the wheel. The total number of accidents that occurred for these reasons is excessive. There is a need for laws that can aid in preventing people from being a part of these distracted driving practices. Unfortunately, a large number of accidents still occur as a result of these distracted driving habits, as many people do not abide by all traffic laws when driving.

In case you are one of those who have suffered in an auto accident that was not your fault and resulted in you having any kind of personal injury, it is highly recommended that you seek out an experienced personal injury attorney that can be helpful in legally representing you. This will aid you in easily filing a claim and receiving your well-deserved compensation. You will see that most insurance companies only deal with damages that are related to the automobile, but not for any sort of damages that are suffered by individuals. This is where having the right personal injury attorney can benefit you, by aiding you through the confusing and complex process of insurance liability claims.

As a Vancouver personal injury lawyer, I’ve seen the devastating effects of car accidents resulting from distracted driving. If you’ve been injured in an accident that you believe was the result of another’s distracted driving, it may be in your best interest to call a personal injury lawyer in your area.
