Ford Aims to Reduce Dangers of Texting While Driving

In recent press releases, the Ford Motor Company has released information concerning upgrades to their SYNC software system that will read text messages aloud to drivers, removing the need for the driver to take their eyes away from the road.

Ford’s SYNC is an interfacing system that is completely integrated with the vehicle for voice commands to operate different devices, including the radio and cell phones, by using Bluetooth technology. The main difference between SYNC and other systems is that the standard existing Bluetooth connection was compatible with many phones. Ford’s SYNC includes the Messaging Access Profile (MAP) protocol that was custom designed for use in cars. The SYNC system is available in some 2011 model and almost all 2012 model Ford vehicles. To install the system, the software can be downloaded onto a USB drive from the company’s website. Then the motorist simply follows the instructions to install the program into the vehicle.

SYNC is part of a wider movement among the auto industry to make vehicles more technology-friendly and improve driver safety simultaneously. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that motorists that use hand-held devices are up to four times more likely to be involved in car accidents involving serious injury. The most at-risk age group is teen drivers, who are more likely to be texting in the first place.

As a Federal Way car accident lawyer, I’m glad to see that efforts are being made on the part of the auto industry to increase driver safety. If you’ve been injured in an accident that you think was the result of another’s distracted driving habits, speak with a car accident lawyer in your area to learn more about your legal options.

NOYS Seeks to Educate on Danger of Texting While Driving

According to news reports, the recent National Organization for Youth Safety (NOYS) Distracted Driving Summit, held in Washington DC during Teen Safe Driving week, focused on discussing the problem of distracted driving and motivating teenage drivers to educate their peers on the subject and alter laws in their own communities.

The recent safety statistics concerning teen drivers are sobering. Car accidents are the primary cause of teen death, and their demographic has the largest percentage of distracted drivers. According to the data, 16 percent of all drivers below the age of 20 involved in fatal car accidents were distracted at the time. The focus of NOYS is to spread the message that these accidents are preventable and to bring about change.

More than 100 youth leaders attending the event were provided with tools from NOYS to educate their communities on the dangers of texting and driving. The leaders are tasked with initiating summits in their own communities to inform their peers of these dangers. Studies have shown that peer-to-peer education is the most successful way to modify teen behavior. Many of the youth leaders committed to lobbying at the state level to pass distracted driving legislation and to strengthen teen graduated licensing laws as well.

As a Federal Way car accident lawyer, I’m aware of the serious problem of teen distracted driving across the nation. I hope that by sharing this information, it will help in providing more information on how to avoid these avoidable incidents and prevent further teen driving-related accidents. If you’ve been injured in an accident that you believe was caused by the distracted driving of another, it may be in your best interests to speak with an experienced car accident lawyer in your city.

Lynnwood I-5 Car-Big Rig Accident Injures Man, Child

Media sources reports that a 19-year-old Lynnwood man and his 12-year-old passenger were moderately injured in an accident on Interstate 5 in Lynnwood Monday night.

According to Washington State Patrol trooper Keith Leary, the accident occurred during the evening commute in the southbound traffic lanes of Interstate 5 near 164th Street SW in Lynnwood. Authorities believe the 19-year-old driver was traveling in the left lanes when, for unknown reasons, his Honda struck the center interstate barrier. The impact forced the driver to lose control of the vehicle and cross all traffic lanes and strike a big rig trailer. The Honda became wedged underneath the wheels of the big rig’s trailer and was dragged for roughly 700 feet before the vehicle was able to stop.

The 19-year-old driver and 12-year-old passenger were transported to a Seattle hospital for the treatment of moderate injuries. The 19-year-old was treated and released within the same night, however the 12-year-old remained hospitalized well into Thursday. Updates on their condition were not available at the time of this release. The driver of the big rig was not injured in the accident.

Washington State Patrol officials are continuing to investigate the cause of the accident and suspect that the incident may have been a possible vehicular assault. At the moment, unsafe lane changing is suspected as a contributing factor to the crash.

As a Bellevue car accident lawyer, I’m relieved to learn that both victims are recovering from their injuries. I wish both of them a speedy recovery so that they may put this incident behind them. If you’ve been injured in an accident as the result of the negligent driving of another, speak with a car accident lawyer in your town to learn more about the legal options open to you.

Frozen Ground Tuna Recalled Due to Elevated Histamine Levels

In a press release, the Osamu Corporation, in conjunction with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), announced the voluntary recall of their frozen ground tuna due to an FDA discovery of elevated histamine levels in several samples of the product taken from one retail location.

The company stated that they are recalling the product out of an abundance of caution because decomposed product may be a contributing factor in the elevated histamine levels. This recall affects roughly 1,800 cases of the ground tuna, identifiable through the lot number 7013.  The frozen ground tune was shipped to several distributors for further nationwide distribution from August 18 to September 8 of this year. The distributors have since removed the product from their stocks and are destroying any remaining.

Histamine, when consumed in food products, can illicit reactions with symptoms of a tingling or burning sensation in the mouth, facial swelling rash, hives and itchy skin, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. The FDA and Osamu urges anyone experiencing these symptoms to seek immediate medical attention to avoid a worsening condition.

The company received reports of three illnesses due to the elevated histamine levels found in sushi at a single location. Customers who have purchased the product from a distributor are being urged to return it to the distributor for a full refund.

As a Federal Way personal injury attorney, I’ve seen similar recalls in the past and understand the severity associated with such situations. If you’ve been injured through the consumption of a defective food product, it may be in your best interests to seek the counsel of an experienced personal injury lawyer in your area to discuss your rights as a consumer.

Sony Bravia Televisions Recalled Due to Fire Hazard

In a news release, Sony announced the recall of 1.6 million flat-panel Bravia televisions sold around the world due to a faulty component that poses a potential fire hazard to consumers.

The recall was initiated after Sony discovered that a faulty component in the backlight system of the affected televisions could potentially overheat, resulting in the television melting or catching fire. While the company is not officially recalling the units, a statement from Sony states, “It has come to our attention through reports in Japan that in rare cases a particular component incorporated in certain models of 40” Bravia LCD HDTVs was damaged and as a result, may overheat and at times ignite inside the television. Sony has sold nearly 400,000 of these TVs in the US and no incidents have been reported to date. While we have no reports of any resulting damages to other property or bodily injuries, Sony offers all customers of the affects models a free in-home evaluation for the covered product.”

The recall of certain 40-inch Bravia televisions has been announced in Japan, but will ultimately spread over the globe, as the same model was sold in the US and UK.

As a Federal Way personal injury lawyer, I’ve witnessed similar recalls in the past and want to warn consumers to be overly cautious in situations where appliances have been known to start fires. If you’ve been injured by a defective product, contact a personal injury lawyer in your city to discuss to legal options open to you.
